Empowering Through Advocacy:

Three Unique Programs Under the Courtside Initiative

Redefining Justice:

Taking the “Criminal” Out of Criminal Justice

Our forensic social workers bring deep experience from inside the courtroom, equipping them with a strong understanding of how the legal system operates. This insight allows us to navigate court processes effectively and advocate for the best possible outcomes for our clients. We often turn criminal charges into opportunities—connecting clients with inpatient or outpatient services that demonstrate a genuine commitment to growth and change.

Labeling someone a “criminal” rarely teaches the intended lesson, especially for those who haven’t been incarcerated. In our experience, humanizing clients in the eyes of the court often leads to more thoughtful, compassionate outcomes. When judges and attorneys see the individual behind the charges, they’re more likely to consider their progress and potential. Similar cases can lead to vastly different results—our strategic, client-centered approach frequently makes that difference.

Many of our clients struggle with decision-making, especially in moments of high stress or anxiety. Roughly 35% are, in some way, victims of their own challenges—whether that’s mental health issues, substance use disorders, or cognitive and psychological limitations. We take the time to listen, understand their worldview, and guide them toward a path tailored to their strengths and needs. When seen through this lens, their actions often appear far more human than criminal.

Being proactive is at the core of what we do. We focus on identifying and addressing problems before they escalate, encouraging clients to take positive steps while their case is pending. Voluntary progress is often more impactful—and better received—than waiting for court-ordered mandates. Our goal is to support our clients not only through their legal journey but in building a foundation for lasting success.

Project Parent:

Parenting is one of life’s most important—and most challenging—roles. It’s a journey marked by growth, setbacks, and learning. Mistakes are not only inevitable but essential, as they often lead to the most meaningful forms of progress. While parents are expected to be responsible, dependable, and accountable, meeting these expectations consistently is a difficult task, and being human means it’s okay to fall short at times.

At the heart of parenting is the shared identity of being a parent first. Society often imposes labels like “mother” or “father,” along with the stereotypes that come with them. These labels can become even more complex in nontraditional family dynamics, such as custody disputes or situations where parents live apart. In our experience, children typically want meaningful relationships with both parents, regardless of the circumstances.

Many of our Project Parent clients come to us seeking to have their voices heard in custody matters. This requires more than just showing up—it takes a well-developed, realistic action plan that builds credibility in the courtroom. We guide clients through practical steps, helping them apply evidence-based strategies to support their case. At the same time, we work to shift the focus toward the child’s perspective, aligning with the court’s “best interests of the child” standard.

Learning in a supportive, structured environment is a key part of this process. We offer mock trials that clients can either attend or participate in, helping them become more familiar with courtroom procedures, expectations, and etiquette. Our social workers also assist with reviewing case facts, improving communication with co-parents or children, and reinforcing each client’s role and strengths as a parent.

Project Parent is more than a program—it’s a path to empowerment, clarity, and meaningful progress for parents navigating complex family dynamics.

No One Walks Alone Initiative

Even when it feels like you’re walking alone, you’re not. Our dedicated social workers are right beside you—guiding, supporting, and advocating every step of the way. Through this initiative, we provide general social services, mentorship, and, in select cases, serve as court-appointed guardians. Our mission is to help individuals build independence, restore self-worth, and take an active role in shaping their own success.

Many participants in this program face significant challenges, including mental health conditions, intellectual or developmental disabilities, and other psychological barriers. We believe there is no one-size-fits-all solution. That’s why we create customized support plans, tailored to each person’s unique needs and goals—ensuring the care they receive is both meaningful and effective.

Our team provides a wide range of services, from improving communication with attorneys to reconnecting clients with DMH or DDS support services. We also assist with employment, housing, healthcare, and the coordination of inpatient or outpatient treatment. By connecting individuals with the right resources, we help foster greater stability and a higher quality of life.
